The Finnish labour temple is a Canadian National Heritage Site at the core of the Bay and Algoma district of Port Arthur/Thunder Bay. Construction began in 1908 and was completed in 1910. Since then it has served as a cultural centre for Thunder Bay Finns as well as host of the “world famous” Hoito restaurant. At The Finlandia, you will be able to own your own piece of Thunder Bay history!

The exterior of the Finnish Labour Temple is highly recognizable with its prominent central tower and cupola framed in by the left and right smaller towers.  While trying to maintain the heritage aspects of the bay street facade we are updating and upgrading the view from both Algoma and Secord street with a third-story loft unit complete with new shed dormers giving potential buyers a view straight through to Lake Superior.  The Algoma entrance will also be completely rebuilt, enlarged and updated to present a more inviting common entrance for residences and giving the second story more windows and larger square footage.

Inside the building we are completely replacing and upgrading:

  • Plumbing
  • Electrical
  • Heating
  • Insulation
  • Framing

When we are finished each and every unit will have new windows, framing, spray foam insulation, electrical, plumbing, heating that is new, of the highest quality that will meet today’s OBC requirements.  Our goal is to provide a product that is an adequate blend of new and old, while high efficiency for the lowest utility costs possible. Our state-of-the-art, natural gas-fired water boilers and geothermal heat pumps coupled with new spray foam insulation and windows will not only make our units comfortable but will save new residents large sums of money in the years to come!

Outside the Finlandia residents will have access to a private walled-in garden complete with an outdoor kitchen, seating area and sauna. 

Inside the Finlandia residents will have private interior access to the Hoito restaurant including a private dining area. You will never have to wait for your Saturday morning pancakes in the resident-only seating area!

The Finlandia will include two additional buildings to be constructed in 2021,2022, 2023. Once complete the entire development will be walled in with private gate access for residents only. You will have private access to the entire compound and security for your vehicle, bicycle, etc. 

Every unit will come with one parking space with additional parking available to purchase or for rent on a first come first serve basis. There are some interior storage rooms available for rent on a first come first serve basis as well.
